Casting Scott Grandstaff's scraper plane

Propane tank, burner and furnace.

Surplus aluminum being poured into ingot molds. The crucible is a propane cylindar! The reddish stuff is molding sand. The corn muffin ingot molds are the most crucible friendly shape I have found.

Flask halves separated exposing smoldering plane body!

Hot plane body picked up with fire place tongs.

Top: the orginal plane (used as a pattern) Bottom: the aluminum copy.

This plane is shown in the Readers Gallery of the recent Tools & Shops issue of Fine Woodworking! (issue 174) Update: It looks like the plane is no longer on the gallery page.
